What is Norway House?

Norway House is a private aid initiative, non-political and non-religious, working to help the children of Cambodia achieve a better future. Norway House consists of a group of volunteers working on a non-profit basis, raising funds through private channels. All funds benefit the projects in full. Through strong focus on health, education and training, Norway House seeks to create the foundation for an independent future generation of well educated, active, healthy and self-sustainable individuals.

Background
The initiative started at the Khmer Friendship Orphanage (KFO) in 2003, when our Norwegian founders were living and working in the region. On travels to Cambodia they realized how much the country was still suffering the effects of a civil war that had seen more than 2 mio. people killed in the years 1975-79.  The living conditions at the orphanage were extremely poor. The children living there, had no energy due to lack of food, did not go to school, and the time was spent searching for anything that could make up the next meal. The caretakers were poor people who lived there because they had no other option.

The Khmer Friendship Orphanage
The orphanage is located one hour drive outside Phnom Penh and is situated in an old military compound. When our initiative started in 2003 more than 200 children between 0-18 years lived there. Over the years this number has thankfully been reduced, and today around 30 children, two of which are severely handicapped, live at the orphanage.  The government in Cambodia runs the orphanage, but they provide only a minimum of financial support. The children cannot survive without help from volunteer organizations. Here the children are showing off new shoes and school uniforms. See a slideshow with pictures from the orphanage and some of our work here.

Student Program
In 2007, we established a scholarship fund, supporting the children who wanted to further their studies after High School. Since then 23 students (12 female) have been supported. They study everything from IT, English, Law to Agriculture. Read more about our Student Program here.

Update 2023
Meet some of our sponsorship students here and learn what they have achieved.

School Projects
In Cambodia  education is still far behind the UN targets and critical for the ability to rebuild the country. In 2013 we therefore initiated a school project that reach a wider group of children in Cambodia, with the collaboration of Child Rights Foundation. Read more about this here.
The first school project was completed in 2016. In 2017 we agreed to participate in a similar project at Prek Rokar Secondary School and in 2019 we sponsored a third school project, promoting childrens nutrition & hygiene in Stoeung Treng province. This project was implemented by CRF from November 2019 to December 2020.

Who we are
Norway House is a group of volunteers responsible for raising funds and deploying these in the most effective way for the children. The initiative is coordinated by a steering committee, and groups of volunteers helping us reach our goals within the areas of health, education and fundraising. All of our work is based entirely upon volunteer support, and it is our goal that 100% of all donations benefit the children in Cambodia.

The co-operation with local partners is of particular importance to Norway House, both in terms of building a good understanding of local challenges and conditions, but also in terms of ensuring continuity in our work. Our main local partner is Child Rights Foundation Cambodia (CRF). This is a private Cambodian organization engaged in the development of children’s general protection, education and welfare.
